PLACES TO SEE IN KOTOR
First of all, it is useful to start by clearing up an important confusion: Kotor is the name of both the historical city, the region in which the historical city is located, and the bay in which the region is located. Those who only see Kotor Stari Grad, the historical center of Kotor, are missing a lot. There are places like fairy tales that must be seen in the Bay of Kotor!
That's why, in order to make a more accurate plan, we say, if you haven't read it yet, start with our ⇨ KOTOR ⇦ article, where we explain all the places to see in the Bay of Kotor and how you should plan a tour.
The article you are reading is a sub-title of it. In this article, you will find only places to visit in Kotor Stari Grad, that is, inside the historical city, and our recommendations. Kotor Stari Grad = historical city of Kotor
Now that we've cleared that up, we can start pouring out our love of Kotor to you. Kotor Stari Grad is one of the most beautiful medieval settlements you will ever see. Just like Cappadocia, it is on UNESCO's both historical and natural heritage list. It is one of the rare places that human hands touch and beautify instead of spoiling it.
It is as if the ideal mix was created by choosing the most beautiful aspects of its geography: Venetian-style fairy-tale architecture, Balkan human warmth, the charm of the Andriatic Sea and Italian cuisine, all united in a sweet medieval settlement reminiscent of Dubrovnik. Although half of the city was destroyed in the two major earthquakes it went through, it was resurrected with perseverance and beauty.
When do you say; If you are thinking of "let me stop by while I pass" on the Balkan tour, you can stop by in any season. For example, cruises continue to arrive 365 days a year. As a result, the historical city can be visited in all seasons, but as we said above, it would be a shame to stop by while passing here, and a very important part of it would be missing.
Leaving without visiting the entire Bay of Kotor is like coming to Istanbul and leaving only to see Topkapi Palace. The ideal is to arrange a 4-5 day Montenegro holiday, and to spend 2 days in Kotor region. Here the best time is June and September. It comes in the 2nd place as July and August are high season. Bay of Kotor isn't that busy during these months, but if you're going to Budva, the crowds and traffic can get crazy.
You can visit the historical Kotor (Stari Grad) in a few hours, but at least 2 days are required to properly tour the Bay of Kotor. We would like to underline that; If you only see the historical Kotor, you will miss a lot. You can sail around the Bay of Kotor in 1 day, but you cannot enjoy it. That's why we recommend at least 2 days. Also, if you are going in the summer, you are likely to be devastated by the heat between 12-17. Plan accordingly.
If you are going to stay in the city, namely in Kotor Stari Grad, you can find our recommendations below. But if you have read our Kotor main article, you already know that we recommend staying in Dobrota the most. Especially for those who can spare 2 days to Kotor. You can also check our hotel and rental house suggestions from that article. If you are not going to stay in the city, namely in Stari Grad, the settlement named Muo is very close to Stari Grad. Those close to house number 1 are the closest. The higher the number, the further away you get from the center.
